Hydrodynamic Entrance Length for Laminar Flow in Microchannels with Rectangular Cross Section

چکیده
This work presents a detailed numerical investigation on the required development length (L=L/B) in laminar Newtonian fluid flow microchannels with rectangular cross section and different aspect ratios (AR). The advent of new microfluidic technologies shifted practical Reynolds numbers (Re) to range unitary (and even lower) orders magnitude, i.e., creeping conditions. Therefore, accurate estimations L at Re?O(1) are important for microsystem design. At such low numbers, which inertial forces less dominant than viscous forces, characteristics become necessarily from those macroscale where Re is typically much larger. A judicious choice mesh refinement adequate methods allowed obtaining results general correlation estimating L, valid ranges 0?Re?2000 0.1?AR?1, thus covering applications both macro microfluidics.

Copyright ©2009 by ASME ABSTRACT Laminar fully developed flow in streamwise-periodic microchannels of rectangular cross-section has been studied in this work. Based on the lubrication approximation, an analytical approach is proposed for the frictional flow resistance. Using the analytical model developed for straight channels of arbitrary cross-section, compact models are developed for linear ...

Pressure drop of fully developed, laminar, incompressible flow in smooth mini and microchannels of arbitrary cross-section is investigated. A compact approximate model is proposed that predicts the pressure drop for a wide variety of shapes. The model is only a function of geometrical parameters of the cross-section, i.e., area, perimeter, and polar moment of inertia. The proposed model is comp...

In the present study, a compact analytical model is developed to determine the pressure drop of fully-developed, incompressible, and constant properties slip-flow through arbitrary cross-section microchannels. An averaged firstorder Maxwell slip boundary condition is considered. Introducing a relative velocity, the difference between the bulk flow and the boundary velocities, the axial momentum...
